As many of us in our community have experienced, “diet thoughts” have a way of emerging through and beyond our healing journey.
Carol and Laurelee remind us in It's Not About Food, “Dieting is a distraction and obsession because it allows us to focus on something very tangible and concrete, giving us the feeling that we are in control. However, for those of us with eating disorders, it can be just another way to “fix” our problems by looking externally, instead of meeting our own internal needs and ultimately getting much more pleasure out of life.”
By paying attention to our thoughts in a mindful way, we can start to track diet thoughts and become aware of how much time we worry about what we should or shouldn’t eat. We can start to explore how these thoughts get triggered and what the feelings are that are connected to these thoughts. As discussed in the Body Love Cards, “When we understand that diet thoughts can sometimes be a response to underlying feelings, we can begin to use diet thoughts as a red flag to explore these feelings.”
